LYNN, MASS. – It took two extra frames for the Fisher College Baseball team to earn a thrilling 10-9 walk-off win over visiting Lesley University this evening at Fraser Field. The Falcons are now inching closer to .500 at 11-12 while the Lynx fall to 8-10 on the season.
Trailing by a run in the bottom of the ninth, junior Moises Febrillet (San Cristobal, D.R.) singled up the middle and stole second to put the tying in scoring position with no outs. The next two hitters were retired in order setting the stage for freshman Kevin Cancel (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico). Down to his last strike, Cancel lifted a ball into shallow leftfield that allowed Febrillet to scamper home and force the extra innings.
The 11th inning was nothing short of a masterpiece. After a quick 1-2-3 top half of the inning, a seven-pitch leadoff walk was earned by sophomore Daniel Peralta (Dunedin, Fla.). Senior Gilbert Gomez (Santo Domingo, D.R.) was inserted as a pinch runner and promptly stole second. A routine ground out allowed Gomez to advance to third as the winning run is now 90 feet away. Head Coach Scott Dulin then went to his bench once again and called upon junior Delvis Matos (Santo Domingo, D.R.), who lined the first pitch he saw down the rightfield line for the game winner and send the faithful fans of Falcon Nation home happy.
Junior Joziel Carmona (Comerio, Puerto Rico) was brilliant in relief as his four scoreless frames kept the Falcons within striking distance. The right-hander allowed just three this and struck out three as he picked up his first win of the season. Senior Camden Redstone (Lee, Mass.) got the start and tossed 4.2 innings, surrendering eight runs (three earned) on nine hits. Sophomore Samuele Sbardolini (Brescia, Italy) struck out three in his 2.1 innings of relief before giving way to Carmona.
Offensively the Falcons only registered eight hits off of Lesley pitching. The biggest hit prior to the ninth inning was a two-run triple by freshman Corey Deziel (Merrimac, Mass.) in the third. Deziel finished the evening 2-for-5 to match Cancel, who was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Sophomore Adriel Cuello (Santo Domingo, D.R.) also recorded two RBI on his 1-for-3 night at the dish.
For Lesley, Anthony Nyhuis and Grant Bazinet each recorded three-hit games as Nyhuis was 3-for-5 with two RBI and Bazinet finished 3-for-6. Alexander Juhasz also knocked in multiple runs on his 1-for-4, two RBI evening.
Kolten Moyer (1-3) was tagged with the loss after giving up the winning run in the 11th. Nyhuis only allowed four hits and eight runs (seven earned) as the Lesley starter and Benjamin Coffey, who gave up the tying run in the ninth, pitched well in relief over his 2.2 innings of work.
These two teams will return to Fraser Field tomorrow night for game two of their season long four-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7pm.
