Falcons fall to Point Park 98-86 in offensive shootout

WEST MIFFLIN, PA. -- Point Park University had six players in double figures and made 10 3-pointers in its 98-86 victory over visiting Fisher College in an American Mideast Conference men's basketball game at CCAC-South on Sunday.

Point Park (13-10, 6-5 AMC) took control with its 10-point halftime lead, 45-35. The Pioneers then built their biggest lead of the day of 23 points, 61-38, with its 16-3 run the first four minutes of the second half.

After putting its offense in high gear Sunday, Point Park's NAIA Division II-leading scoring average stands at 90.0 ppg. The Pioneers are fifth in the country with 9.1 made 3-pointers per game.

The victory and the season sweep over Fisher (9-20, 2-10 AMC) moves Point Park into a tie for second place in the AMC standings with Wilberforce. Although Wilberforce is 7-3 in the AMC, both teams are 6-3 when taking out results versus playoff non-eligible Walsh.

Point Park's Devon Alexander totaled a game-high 22 points on 9 of 13 from the floor. The score was tied at 25-25 at the 6:18 mark of the first half, but Alexander's conventional 3-point played capped off a 16-2 run that gave the Pioneers at 41-27 lead with 2:18 left in the half.

Jimmy Taylor poured in 16 points on 6 of 10 shooting off the bench. The 6-2 guard from Keystone Oaks High School had eights points, two treys and two assists in each half and ended up 4 of 8 from the perimeter.

As a team, Point Park was 10 of 33 from long range. Asa Braxton totaled 13 points, 10 rebounds and made three treys. Point Park's 41 bench points were rounded out with 12 points, six assists and two treys from Robbie Heatherington. Starter Eric Johnson added 10 points and five boards.

T.J. Heatherington finished with 21 points mainly due to his 18-for-20 performance from the foul line. The Pioneers' point guard was 14 of 16 from the line in the final seven minutes.

Point Park had 22 assists on 30 baskets and shot 41 percent (30 of 74) overall. Besides Robbie Heatherington with six assists, his brother T.J. had five and Taylor and Braxton had four each.

Fisher got the deficit down to 76-63 with 7:23 to play and on a few occasions were a couple of possessions away from making it a single-digit game, but the Pioneers kept the Falcons at bay with free throws.

Overall, Point Park made 28 of 35 foul shots (80 percent), and Fisher was just 10 of 20 from there. Fisher was also cold from the perimeter at 4 of 17 and got out-rebounded, 55-46.

The Falcons had five players in double figures led by forward Dennis Norford with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Fellow post players Alan Womack and Ryan McCorkle had 18 and 16, respectively.

Fisher closes out their regular season with a home game against the University of Maine - Augusta on Thursday night.  This will be senior Dennis Norford's last game for the Falcons and tip-off is scheduled for 7pm.
