Men’s Basketball Victorious in Nail Biter with Vaughn 70-69

Boston, MA - In a chaotic back-and-fourth game, the Falcons managed to hold on to a one-point victory over visiting Vaughn College in the last few seconds of the game. With the 70-69 victory, Fisher moves to 9-3 on the season, while Vaughn drops to 4-6.

The Warriors jumped to a quick 2-0 lead, but Tyler Shular (Norwalk, CT) hit a jump shot to knot the score at two with only 2:01 played in the game. Shular then hit a three-point shot to put the Falcons up 5-2. Chris Green (Middle Island, NY) then improved the Falcons' lead to 8-2 by hitting a three-pointer on a steal by Geodice Ortiz (Denver, CO).

Fisher College then went on a 12-point run to put the Falcons up 20-5. After Kyle Holmes (Hamden, CT) hit a three for Fisher, Vaughn bounced back and pushed back within seven. With 8:06 left in the half, Rashad Luckett hit one from behind the arc to bring the score to 24-17, Falcons lead. Possession of the ball bounced back and forth for a solid minute before Jonas Rusom (Hasselby, Sweden) hit a three-pointer to put the Falcons back on track and lead the Warriors 29-17.

The Falcons continued to battle with the Warriors and Fisher was able to take a 15-point lead when Rusom hit another shot from behind the arc, making the score 36-21. Before time ran out in the first half, Vaughn scored four points to freeze the score at 36-25 heading into the break.

Shular lit the path for the Falcons in the first half as he scored 14 points and had two rebounds. Rusom was another key player in the half, scoring eight points to ensure the Falcon half-time lead.

Luckett powered the Warriors in the first half with six points and two rebounds. Other key players for Vaughn in the first half were Sergio Mejia, Isiah Reed, and Anthony Bligen.

The second half was one for the books when Mejia tied the game at 39 after he hit a layup for the Warriors. Shular then put the Falcons up by three, 42-39, after making a layup while getting fouled and hitting the free throw right after. Vaughn then pushed ahead of the Falcons when Michael Pena hit a jump shot making the score 43-42, Warriors lead.

Green hit two free throws for the Falcons to put the team back up over Vaughn 44-43. Two Falcons' layups pushed the Falcons to a five-point lead to bring the score to 48-43. A Warrior jump shot and three pointer knotted the game, yet again, at 48. Fisher held the Warriors for a few minutes to gain a lead of five, 53-48. Vaughn powered back and came within two, 55-53, with only 6:18 left in the game.

Fisher took a seven-point lead when Ortiz hit a layup, putting the Falcons up 62-55. The Falcons held onto the lead until Mejia hit a layup and put the Warriors up 69-68 over the Falcons with 18 seconds on the clock. With six seconds on the clock, Reed fouled Holmes and put him at the line shooting two. Holmes hit both shots, which then gave Vaughn the ball, but gave Fisher a 70-69 lead. Vaughn pushed down the court and tried to hit a three pointer, but missed the shot as time ran out, giving the Falcons the victory.

Shular finished the game with 17 points, leading the Falcons to their victory. Holmes also scored double digits with 11 points. Other Falcons making an impact in the game were Rusom (eight points), Green (eight points), and Ortiz (six points, nine rebounds).

Mejia dominated for the Warriors, scoring 20 points despite the loss. Luckett and Pena both scored 12 points for the Warriors, but it wasn't enough to get passed the Falcons.

The Falcons have a couple days off, but will return Tuesday, December 16, to take on Mitchell College at 6:00 pm in the Fecteau-Leary Gymnasium in Lynn, MA. Fisher then takes on the University of Maine-Fort Kent on Saturday, December 20, before taking some time off for winter break.
