Medford, MA- After dropping the first game of the season, the 2018 Men's Soccer team bounced back with a hard fought victory against University of Maine-Presque Isle (2-2), winning 3-1.
The Falcons (1-1) found the back of the net in the 15th minute with a cross from Joel Bailey (Deridder, LA) which was tipped in by forward, Erick Kayongo (Saint Louis, MO). Only six minutes later, UMPI applied hard pressure on the Falcons defense which resulted in a handball on Fisher outside of the penalty box. Andre Rossignol (Van Buren, ME) netted a laser in the upper left corner just out of reach for Falcons goalkeeper, Christopher Garcia (Heights, CA). Continuing through the first half each team had many chances but came up short, until a foul on the Owls' Paul Kaplan (Embden, ME) inside the penalty box leading to a penalty shot for Falcons Andrew Leveillee (Coventry, RI). He placed his shot in the upper right corner past Owls goalie Caleb Thompson (Washburn, ME). As the half came to an end each team had equal opportunities but with some great saves on each side so the score remained 2-1.
Right into the second half UMPI put the pressure on the Falcons goalie Garcia, but those opportunities were kept in front of him. The Falcons responded with Roland Pinero (Coral, FL) busting down the right wing and ripping a hard shot that was saved but left in front for the goal hungry forward Trevor Moschiano (Geneva, NY) who put home the rebound, giving the Falcons a 3-1 lead in the 62nd minute. UMPI continued to fight back with a corner kick opportunity that lead to a scrum out front, but Garcia was there to recover the ball. Each team battled hard until the 90th minute, but the score remained unchanged, earning the Falcons their first win of the 2018 season.
The men's team will take this victory and momentum with them to New Haven, Connecticut tomorrow as they kick off against Albertus Magnus College at 1:00 PM.
