Fisher Falls to Alfred State 98-69

Boston, MA – Fisher College women's basketball drops to 2-15 on the season as they fell by 98-64 in a non-conference match-up to Alfred State University, which improves its record to 10-4.

The game started with a back-and-forth momentum as Fisher took a 3-2 lead on a Murphy Carroll (Methuen, MA) shot behind the arc. The Pioneers took a 4-3 lead, but not before Madison Carroll (Methuen, MA) mimicked her sister's shot and put the Falcons up 6-4. Jennifer Fredrick netted a shot to knot the game at six. Alfred State took the lead at 8-6 and took its biggest lead, at the time, of seven, 21-14.

The Falcons came within three points of the Pioneers with layups by Shakieya Roland-Drake (Boston, MA) and Alexis Akridge (Union, NJ) bringing the score to 21-18 with 9:46 left in the half. Alfred State then went on a nine-point run to take a 30-18 lead before Camila Da Silva (Everett, MA) sunk a shot for the Falcons, making the score 30-20. With just under two minutes left to play in the half, Haley Whitchella made a jump shot to give the Pioneers an 11-point lead, 44-33. Christine Briggs (Rumford, ME) hit a shot before time expired for the Falcons, but the score was frozen at 46-35 heading into the half. 

Murphy Carroll powered through for the Falcons in the first half, scoring nine points and grabbing two rebounds. Roland-Drake and Akridge were other key Falcons in the half, scoring eight and six points, respectively.

Witchella lit the way for the Pioneers with 17 points and 10 rebounds in the first half. Other key Pioneers were Briana Meehan with nine points and Jennifer Fedrick with seven points.

Akridge came out of the break with determination as she made the first layup in the second half, 46-37. Both Murphy Carroll and Akridge hit threes to cut the Alfred State lead back to seven, 50-43. The Falcons and the Pioneers fought hard on the court, but the Pioneers secured the game when they took a 15-point lead with 10:22 left in the game. Akridge, Murphy Carroll, and Madison Carroll continued to score for the Falcons, but it just wasn't enough as the Pioneers finalized the score at 98-69.

Several Falcons scored double digits in the loss. Murphy Carroll led the team with 20 points and five rebounds. Akridge managed 18 points while grabbing five boards. Both Roland-Drake and Madison Carroll scored 10 points, with Roland-Drake grabbing seven rebounds and Madison Carroll five.

Witchella was the leading scorer for the Pioneers, earning a double-double with 29 points and 13 rebounds. Two other Alfred State players scored double digits in the victory: Fedrick with 13 points and five rebounds, and Meehan with 12 points and six rebounds.

The Falcons return to action Thursday, January 29, when they play host to Vermont Tech at 5:00 pm. The women's game will be the first game of a double-header in the Fecteau-Leary Gymnasium when the men's teams face each other at 7:00 pm.
