Puerto Rico – Two universities will visit Puerto Rico during the first week of October as part of the Roberto Clemente Cup, NAIA edition. The two visiting teams will face the local universities in an historical effort to have them join the NAIA Conference.
The tournament will honor the late Roberto Clemente and has been organized with the help of Fisher College Head Baseball Coach Scott Dulin. The Clemente family teamed up with Meet Puerto Rico to host a welcoming reception for the visiting and local universities. The Clemente Cup efforts are focusing on an exclusive NAIA affiliation with the local universities to host four teams per week (WED-TUE) for a total of nine weeks of games to be played in Puerto Rico.
The economic impact through sports tourism generated by the Clemente Cup is truly significant at a time most needed. The addition of other sports disciplines will secure a revolving tournament pattern that will establish Puerto Rico as a destination for collegiate sports.
The teams, their coaches, and the people of Puerto Rico are set to enjoy the opportunities that the Clemente Cup has to offer. The addition of more games per season will ensure the draft inclusion of participating players and athletes who choose to attend Puerto Rican universities.
"The Roberto Clemente family and the Roberto Clemente Foundation are looking forward to welcoming coaches, players, and fans to the island of Puerto Rico," said Luis R. Clemente, Roberto's son. "We are committed in providing a rich and enlightening cultural and baseball experience and looking forward to seeing everyone in October 2017."
