NAIA Athletes To Their Core

NAIA Athletes To Their Core

In 2010 Fisher College was named a Character of Champions Five Star Institution for their dedication to following the Core Values set forth by the NAIA.  These core values of Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, and Servant Leadership are continuously being displayed by Fisher's Student-Athletes.

Most recently the Women's Soccer program here has followed the value of Servant Leadership to its fullest meaning.  Servant Leadership, described by the NAIA, "encourages individuals to serve others while staying focused on achieving results in line with the organization's values."

Fresh of one of the most successful seasons in the program's short history, Women's Soccer has not only bettered their own program but has also come to the aid of another.  During the 2012 season the soccer team's hard work and dedication to their craft saw them improve in every statistical category from 2011.  As a reward for their efforts, the group of young women earned the program's first win in three seasons.

At the end of a long, grueling two and a half month season the Women's Soccer team could have easily taken a break from competition.  However, for eight of the players, this wasn't the case.

The women's basketball season started just four days after the last soccer game.  The women's program was just about to embark on a new era, with a new Head Coach and a lot of fresh faces.  Unfortunately, the enthusiasm of a new season quickly turned into struggles.  Just five games into the season four members of the women's basketball program were sideline.   Javana Bernard, last season's leading scorer, and Mariah Lahaye were sitting due to injuries while two other member's left the program for personal reasons.

The women's basketball program was hurting.  The decrease in roster size was without warning.   Up stepped women's soccer.  Realizing the women's basketball team was in need of help, members of the soccer team made the choice to volunteer their time and help their fellow student-athletes.

In athletics the team's chances for success are increased when its members become servant-leaders.  A team made up of servant-leaders trusts their coach to make the best decisions for the team. In this case the women's soccer team made the decision to help the entire athletic department.  Each of the eight players, all of whom have various levels of basketball backgrounds, are displaying the true meaning of servant leadership. Their eagerness to help another program enables more athletes to continue to play the game the love.

Senior Kaleigh Gilbert, juniors Deanna Morency, Delia Brimmer and Michelle Fabiano, sophomores Madilyn Pearsall and Andrea Martucci, and freshmen Ashley De Sousa and Rebecca Streeter have changed uniforms but not their goals. Understanding the situation the basketball team found themselves in, these eight women's soccer players took on the challenge of playing another sport at the collegiate level.

All though they are no longer on the soccer field together, these young ladies have stuck together and fought to achieve results through perseverance and pride. To these young women and many other student-athletes on campus, putting on the Fisher uniform is something special.  The uniform represents the successes, struggles, highs and lows every athlete feels.  The uniform is symbol, showing the importance of on relying on others to help achieve team and individual goals.  The hard work and dedication put in day in and day out will help mold these student-athletes into successful leaders as adults. Collegiate athletics is not just about the wins and losses but about the bonds created.  The friendships created through competition will last a lifetime.

The women's soccer team is creating bonds and memories not only with each other but with another program as well.  Their selfless acts are allowing the women's basketball program and athletic department as a whole to continue to strive towards future success.  Without the efforts of these young women, the Fisher experience would be lost by some many others.  Their magnanimity shines a positive light on Fisher athletics. Regardless of the results on the field or court, it is certain the efforts of so many athletes on this campus will remain both positive and rewarding for years to come.
